The Nebraska Department of Veteran’s Affairs (NDVA) is currently monitoring 33 bills related to Veterans and military affairs, with two signed into law: LB 43, concerning renewable energy near military installations, and LB 209, which offers property tax exemptions for Veterans with VA approved disability rating.
At the MOAA National level, we're preparing for the Advocacy in Action event in Washington DC in April. We're focusing on logistics for meetings with elected officials and promoting advocacy in five areas. Refer to the March newsletter for details. I'll provide more updates next month.
The guest speaker at our March Dinner was John Hilgert, Director of the Nebraska Department of Veteran’s Affairs, provided an informative briefing on the department's history, current services, and future plans for Nebraska veterans. The chapter has partnered with Bellevue University’s Military Veterans Services Center, offering a physical presence and access to facilities and technology to enhance community outreach and support for veterans.
This year, the Heartland of America Chapter awarded five $700 scholarships to ROTC cadets from various branches in Nebraska, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The recipients, who also received the MOAA medal and certificate, were from ROTC programs at UNL, UNO, and Creighton University. Additionally, cadets from 17 high school JROTC programs were honored with the MOAA medal and certificate at their spring awards ceremonies.
We are moving to the Bellevue University Military/Veterans Center in April
